Illinois Mascot Axed

The 81-year-old mascot at the University of Illinois has danced his last half-time dance according to The Chicago Tribune:
The University of Illinois' American Indian mascot, Chief Illiniwek, no longer will perform at athletic events on the school's main campus after Wednesday — the last men's home basketball game of the season.

School officials today issued a news release on the retirement of the 81-year-old mascot, who is portrayed by buckskin-clad students who dance at football and basketball games and other athletic events.
Chalk up another victory for the politically correct.
